If you are experiencing Roblox crash errors, there are a few possible solutions. This is because the reason why Roblox is crashing for you may be different to someone else. Additionally, along with the crash message, you may see the “An unexpected error occurred and Roblox needs to quit” message.
Disable Fullscreen Optimizations
One possible solution for the Roblox crash error is to set the Roblox application to run with fullscreen optimizations disabled. While this may be simple, many games will perform better when the disable fullscreen optimizations setting is enabled.
1. Open the Start menu and search for Roblox.
2. Right-click on Roblox and select Open File Location.
3. Right-click on the Roblox shortcut and select Open File Location again.
4. Select the Roblox application, then right-click and open the Properties.
5. Switch to the Compatibility tab.
6. Check the box to Disable Fullscreen Optimizations.
7. Click Apply and Ok.
If changing this setting doesn’t stop the Roblox crashing issues then you can follow the same steps to turn it back off.
Restart Your PC
Although the simplest option, restarting your PC is always worth the effort when trying to fix issues. If an application or background process is the reason why Roblox keeps crashing then restarting your PC can stop the issue.
Close Other Applications
One reason why Roblox may be crashing is because the game doesn’t have enough resources to run correctly. You can try eleviate this issue by closing other applications that you aren’t using. You can do this by clicking the cross icon at the top of the applications.
Some applications remain running in the background when closed, and will appear in the hidden icons menu. Because of this you will need to close some applications from the hidden icons menu on the taskbar. This can be done by right-clicking on the application and selecting either Exit or Quit. Additionally, you will want to make sure not to close any applications that you’re unsure of what it does.
Delete Roblox Temp Files
If the crashing issues is due to corrupt files then deleting the Roblox temp files may solve the issue. Temp files aren’t very important when it comes to actually making the game run. However, they typically help improve performance. Once the temp files have been deleted, new ones will automatically be created when you play Roblox.
1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Run.
2. Type $temp% and click Ok.
3. Find and select the Roblox folder.
4. Right-click on the Roblox folder and choose to Delete.
Turn Off Discord Hardware Acceleration
As many players don’t have voice chat in Roblox, Discord is often used as a replacement, allowing friends to talk as they play. By default Discord usually has hardware acceleration enabled. While this won’t directly cause Roblox to crash, it can take up resources, resulting in the “An unexpected error occurred and Roblox needs to quit” error. Because of this you can try turning off the Hardware acceleration setting to improve performance when gaming.
1. Click the gear icon to open the User Settings.
2. Select Advanced from the side.
3. Turn off the Hardware Acceleration setting.
4. Click Okay & Discord will restart.
Turn Off Game Overlays
Although an uncommon solution, you may find turning off game overlays will stop Roblox from crashing. There are many game overlays, with two of the more common being the NVIDIA game overlay and Discord game overlay. Typically, game overlays can easily be turned off through their respective application settings.
Uninstall and Reinstall Roblox
Another solution is to uninstall and reinstall Roblox. However, instead of just uninstalling Roblox like you would any other application, you will want to remove other game files that are left behind. Doing this will ensure that a clean install occurs when you reinstall the Roblox application. This process can also fix other issues where Roblox isn’t opening.
1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Installed Apps or Apps & Features.
2. Find the Roblox Player Application.
3. Click the three dots then select Uninstall.
4. Select Uninstall again to confirm.
5. Allow changes if asked then click Ok after Roblox has uninstalled.
6. Right-click the Start menu and choose Run.
7. Type %localappdata% then click Ok.
8. Select the Roblox folder, then right-click and choose to Delete.
9. Run the Roblox Installer.
Use the Microsoft Store Version of Roblox
If all else fails you can try using the Microsft Store version of Roblox. While this version still is different, it still works similarly to the application version. In many cases using the Microsoft store version of Roblox will fix issues with Roblox. Additionally, you can use the Microsoft version temporarily and see if a future update fixes the standard version.
