How to use a Green Screen in OBS

If you are familiar with watching gaming live streams or videos then you have probably seen someone making use of a green screen before. With OBS you can remove the green color from a video or image, leaving the area blank. This method isn’t limited to just green, however it is the most common color used. Fortunately OBS makes it incredibly easy to remove the green screen from sight.

1. Open OBS and select the scene that you want to add the green screened media to.

2. Create a new source and select Video Capture Device for a webcam, Image source for your an image or overlay, and media source for a video overlay. Typically you will be using a green screen with a camera overlay.

3. Once you have your source created you can add a filter by right clicking and selecting the “Filters” option.

4. Once the filters menu has opened press on the “Plus” icon in the bottom left, and choose Chroma Key.

5. The key color type will be on green by default, if you are using a different color you can select it from the dropdown menu. Your options should be between green, blue, magenta and custom.

6. Usually the default settings for each color will work rather well, however you can use the sliders to adjust how removal process affects the image/video.

7. If you are using a custom color you can take a screenshot or image and use a color picker to find the color code you need. A lot of photo editing and video programs have this tool, or you can use a free online version.

What can you use a Green Screen for?

The most common use for a green screen is placing it behind you so you can have your background be transparent. This is done by many streamers and video creators and if done right can look very professional. You can also take advantage of green screens for adding effects or overlays to your content.
