How to Add Twitch Chat Box to Your OBS Stream

Adding your twitch chat to your streams can help make your viewers feel more inclusive by allowing them to see their message live on the screen. You can add your Twitch chat box to your live stream in OBS by using the browser source. The best practice when using a chat box is to be sure to have your graphics, screens and overlays set up to incorporate it.

1. Open your web browser of choice and log into StreamLabs with your Twitch account. Be sure to allow authorization as this is needed for you to import your chat with OBS.

2. On the left you should see a list of features, select “All Widgets” and then choose “Chat Box”.

3. A new page will load, here you will find the options that you can use to customise the look of the chat. You can choose between the Theme of the chat, font size, how long the messages last, what icons, emblems and emotes are shown. There are also other options that you can tinker with until you have everything set the way you want it. If you want the background of the chat to be transparent then you should leave the background color as black.

4. Once you have all the settings the way that you want it choose to save the settings.

5. Above the preview you will find your Widget URL. Choose to Copy it to save it to your clipboard.

6. Open OBS and select the scene that you want to add the chat to.

7. Choose to add a new source by pressing the plus symbol, and choose “Browser” or “Browser Source”. If you don’t have either of these options you may need to reinstall your OBS and be sure to choose to install this plugin.

8. Name the source if needed and choose to continue.  Paste the URL and select the width and height that you want. These are in pixels and you can always adjust the values later.

9. Press ok then move and transform the new source to be placed where and how you want. If you go to your twitch channel and type in the chat you should see the message in your OBS. You can use this to see how the chat will look when you’re live.

When aiming for a high quality professional stream it’s common for you to set up multiple scenes. This means you will need to set up each source individually for each scene that you want the chat to be shown. Thankfully the process doesn’t take too much time.
